This is the crucial question, and it's not an easy one to answer. For me to give you an estimate, we will need to discuss the specifics of the job. Drop me a line with your (active) email address or telephone number and timezone, and give me a paragraph or two about the work you want done, and I'll get back to you - usually within 24 hours. For small jobs I will be able to give you a firm quote, but this might not be possible for larger jobs.

As a rough guide, expect to pay about US$150 per hour for web design, graphic, and programming work, and US$100 per hour for copywriting. Training varies enormously depending on the content, whether custom materials are needed, and the training mode (live seminars, online, email, etc). Initial discussions, estimates, and information gathering are free of charge.

I am willing to negotiate and barter for speculative ventures such as independent films, startups, and the like where those ventures seem to be of particular merit. Producer credits and share allotments are two examples of possible types of payment in those situations. I will do at-cost work for charitable organisations whose ideologies are common with my own.

Generally, I require a 50% retainer at the beginning of the job, and the balance at the end for small jobs, or scheduled installments for larger ones. Installments can be tied to specific stages of the work, as well as a specific date. We might agree that a certain installment falls due on June 30, but before you're obliged to pay, I have to produce a preview of a certain stage of the work (for instance, an example of a shopping cart, or a template of the main portion of the site).

Where particular equipment is needed to meet your requirements, you may be charged for that as well. You will always be told about this ahead of time and given suggestions for ways of avoiding or minimising the cost. Generally this would only apply to high-end multimedia work, such as editing full-screen video.
